Sciatica is a condition in which sciatic nerve is damaged which is the largest nerve in the human body. This nerve runs from the spine bottom through hip, joint and then ankle pain associated with the condition is felt deep inside the leg. It can also cause numbness, weakness and tickling in the leg with a sharp feeling of burning and the patient feels uncomfortable all the time. Sciatica pain can only be achieved by treating the cause of the pain otherwise, it can alleviate for short periods.

There are different reasons by which this nerve can face damage or pressure, which needs complete diagnosis. Painkillers anti-inflammatory medication is prescribed to the patient for temporary relief. Dr. Melanie Novak MD suggests if the condition is severe than cortisone injects are administrated. Resting, placing hot and cold packs on the affected area can also provide relief the situation.

Sciatica can be a result of different things including spodylolisthesis, Piriformis, herniated or slipped disk, spinal stenosis, osteoporosis, tumors and pregnancy. These causes can further cause by various factors. Each of these causes needs serious consideration in order to relief sciatica pain on a permanent basis.

There are other physical exercises, which are recommended for relieving pain. Strengthening exercise and stretches may target the causes of the sciatica. Piriformis muscles through stretches can be relieved in case of periformis syndrome. This will strengthen the gluteal muscles surrounding which provides support in the hip areas and taking off the piriformis muscle strain and ultimately sciatic nerve.

If this condition is caused by back problems such as spondylolisthesis or herniated disk strengthening the muscles ill help relieving pressure on the nerve, which must have been placed due to the weakness in the back.

A herniated disk condition refers to that situation in which disk in the back has been slipped or pushed on to the muscles, this can happen due to unusual postures and sports injury. In the most extreme cases patients are recommended for surgery which is the only way left to treat the cause of the sciatica.

There are several treatments which can people consider at home such as exercise, yoga and Pilates. These are believed to have beneficial effects and you can easily perform at the comfort of your home. Dr. Melanie Novak MD says if the cause of the sciatica is the spinal stenosis, which is referred to as the spinal canal narrowing surgery, is the only option left in such case. Surgery is also the possible of removing tumors, which must be pushing on the sciatic nerves.
